It's 2025, and a new set of interior design trends are making themselves at home in popular culture! Here at Nowell & Co, we know nothing is as important as personal style, but we also know that design trends are a great source of inspiration. Trends often work as jumping-off-points when it comes to determining personal taste and style. By paying close attention to what's popular, we can shed light (or, a warm glow) on the truth behind the trend. Many times, design trends can give us a look into how we as a society are interacting with aesthetics, and how we are utilizing our homes and living spaces in the modern day.

The first 2025 trend on our list is "Cozy Minimalism." This style blends minimalist design with comfort and homeyness. When we think of minimalism, we often think of stark lines and sterile whites, but we may see a shift in this image in 2025. Decorilla cites "Minimalist With a Cozy Twist" as one of their top 20 Interior Design Trends of 2025. Elle Decor mentions a focus on comfort in design, while Vogue lists all-white exteriors as "out" this year.

We may be able to connect this focus on coziness to the popularization of the Danish concept of "Hygge." Various aspects of Scandinavian design have risen in US popularity since the dawn of the 2020's, and are often discussed in conjunction with the Covid-19 pandemic. "Hygge" is one of these aspects, and can connect easily with today's "Cozy Minimalism" trend. The word "Hygge" can't be directly translated into english, but generally evokes feelings of coziness and contentment. In terms of interior design, the "Hygge" concept places value on the comfort and enjoyment of those living in the space. "Cozy Minimalism" shares some of these core principals.

To give you an idea of what "Cozy Minimalism" looks like in practice, here are a few key features of the style, illustrated with items straight off of Nowell & Co's showroom floor.

1. Cozy Neutrals

As a style, "Cozy Minimalism" embraces neutrals, but steers away from bright whites and cold grays. Instead, the trend calls for warmer, softer neutrals, like creams, tans, and browns. "Mocha Mousse," Pantone's color of the year, fits in perfectly with this type of color scheme. These "cozier" neutrals allow for the introduction of some warmth into a space while maintaining an overall clean and simple look.

2. Woods & Natural Materials

One key aspect of "Cozy Minimalist" interior design is the integration of natural materials. Elements crafted from natural materials like wood, wicker, stone, rattan, bamboo, and even seagrass can work to ground a minimalist design, giving the space a comforting and earthy feel. Natural woven fabrics are another way to achieve a this effect. Integrate wools, hemps, leathers, or linens to soften up a space while maintaining a minimalist look. Many of these materials are both natural and neutral, making them perfect for the "Cozy Minimal" aesthetic.

3. Soft Accents

Another way to cozy up a minimalist space is by accessorizing with soft accents and organic shapes. Traditionally, minimalism calls for somewhat sparse interiors and angular lines. "Cozy Minimalism," on the other hand, embraces curving shapes and soft touches. Plush pillows and throw blankets are one easy way to soften up a minimalist space. Another is by incorporating round, organic shapes into the design with curved furniture or decor accessories.

4. Warm Lighting

Another trick to add coziness to any minimal space is to use warm-toned or natural lighting. Dressing large windows with breathable drapery is one way to ensure natural light, which will always brighten up a space. When this is not possible, it's best to avoid harsh, ultra-bright light and steer toward warm lighting. This could mean utilizing table or floor lamps as opposed to overhead lighting. Choosing warm-toned lampshades as opposed to true white can also contribute to cozier lighting.

5. Minimal Clutter

While "Cozy Minimalism" is less stripped back than true minimalism, anyone aiming for the trend should continue to focus on keeping the space clean and uniform. It will add to the coziness factor to decorate with plush throw pillows or carefully placed accessories, but be sure to keep it simple when it comes to decor. The key is to strike a careful balance between minimalism, which favors open space and sleek lines, and coziness, which works best in intimate settings full of plush, soft shapes.

Although the concepts of minimalism and coziness may seem contrary to each other, it is this contrast that makes "Cozy Minimalism" such a desirable aesthetic. When achieved, these spaces maintain the calming, clean atmosphere of a minimalist interior while adding an inviting and comforting touch of coziness.

Thanks for reading our first design trend highlight of 2025. What do you think of the "Cozy Minimalism" decor aesthetic? Do you prefer your space cozy or minimal? Is the concept of "Cozy Minimalism" too contrary to itself to work in practice? And is this new form of minimalism a lasting movement in design, or will it fade away quickly with time like other design trends of the past? Let us know what you think below!
